When Life Gives You Lemons

When Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade

Y’all, one might say that this season we’re in is full of lemons. We haven’t been able to go places we like to go, see people we want to see…everything is different.

So, I decided to embrace the lemons and make lemonade…or at least figurative lemonade by decorating with them.

start of the process

Y’all, this is how the process starts. I drag out a bunch of materials that I think I would like to make an arrangement with. I look at the mess of it, and then start to build.

I always start with the left side of our entertainment center. We have a southern rustic style, so I enjoy starting my arrangements with wood slices.

My next step: build height. I started with a clear and gold glass stripe container that I picked up at Home Goods several years ago. When using artificial greenery or flowers, I fill my containers with burlap. I filled this container with a long piece of artificial fern to give it some height and volume. In my second container, I did the same process, but used a different piece of greenery.

Next, I pulled out an antique Kraft Pimento Cheese box. These are the absolute best! I found several of these at my grandmother’s house. I’ve also found them at Lexington’s Vintage Market Days Festival. I filled the box with some burlap, then filled it with three lemon plant stems from Target.

In front of the box, I added two wooden letter signs that I picked up at Home Goods. I have an “S” for Sydney and a “K” for Kyle, my hubby. I finished the arrangement with a small Keeneland gatepost statue and two tea light candles.

On the right side of our entertainment center, I built everything inside a bourbon barrel basket from Bourbon Creek, a local shop. Bourbon Creek is a Lexington family business. They build all sorts of amazing items from bourbon barrels. They’re incredible!

I filled the basket with craft paper and burlap, then added some greenery, lemons from Target and cotton. Beside the basket, I added an amazing three-wick candle from Bath & Body Works.

I love these arrangements together. They are springy and bring beautiful pops of color to our living room.
