OrangeTheory: The Science

“The Body Achieves What the Mind Believes.”

Y’all, we can’t dream of being fit…We can’t ask for a fairy godmother…& we can’t click our heels together to become fit. But, OrangeTheory can make all the difference!

After a dozen workouts at OrangeTheory, I have come to LOVE it!

Why is it different from other workouts? Science! I’ll be honest, I was skeptical at first, but now I know.

Ellen Latham, the creator of the OrangeTheory workout wanted to create something that would metabolically charge the body. OrangeTheory is based on the science of EPOC, excess post-exercise oxygen consumption. When you exercise at a high intensity, your metabolism revs and makes you burn calories long after your workout ends. It’s called the “afterburn.”

During each workout, you wear a heart rate monitor. OrangeTheory offers several different heart rate monitors, and they’ll be releasing one that works with the Apple Watch next month (February 2020). The OrangeTheory workout is made up of 5 heart rate zones, each given a different color.

Grey - Very Light Activity

Blue - Warm Up

Green - Challenging But Doable

Orange - Orange Effect, Uncomfortable

Red - All Out Effort

Each workout is set up so that you spend at least 12 minutes in the Orange Zone. You earn a “splat point” for each minute you spend in the Orange or Red Zone.

Your heart rate monitor keeps track of what zone you’re in throughout your workout, and you can check it out on the TVs in the studio.

Y’all, just writing all of this, I think about how truly remarkable this workout is. For years I have enjoyed working out, but honestly, never understood how it all works. Physically, I may not be seeing much change, yet, but mentally, absolutely!

I have never ever been a runner, but after OrangeTheory, I have run over a mile, without stopping. Now, to many, that may not seem like much at all, but to me, it’s everything! OrangeTheory has given me confidence & determination. I look forward to each class & encourage everyone to give it a try!
